Four years separate us from the release of the first Son of Gears Chronographs collection by ArtyA. With the uncompromising success of the first series of unique pieces, it is with pride that the independent Geneva-based brand now presents a collection that has been crafted and cared for down to the last detail. Numerous developments have been made to offer exclusive timepieces and know-how in line with the development of the Swiss brand. Chronograph collection Complexity, sportiness, and elegance transposed in a cutting edge timepiece. To satisfy all expectations and uses, ArtyA has proposed a range of three different cases for its new chronographs. The first two are in steel, rhodium-plated or with black DLC treatment. With their timeless design, they give a sporty or distinguished appearance depending on the composition in which they are associated. ​ ​ The third case is inevitably the product of ArtyA's specialization in this cutting-edge material, sapphire crystal. With its unequalled transparency and lightness, it transmits an unparalleled energy to its wearer. Thanks to its luminosity, it is without a doubt the best way to highlight its enamel dial and skeletonized movement. This case is incredibly scratch proof because of the remarkable hardness of sapphires – 9 on the Moh’s scale (apx 1800 Vickers) the third hardest mineral, after diamond at 10 and moissanite at 9,5. This is why it is long difficult and costly to create a full sapphire case to the high standard of ArtyA. There is another side for ArtyA that is of high interest to us, sapphire have properties and powers that we can feel and enjoy or at least consider positively. The sapphire has, for centuries, been seen as a symbol of heavens, a guardian of innocence, a bestower of truth, a promoter of good health, and a preserver of chastity. A handmade dial All the pieces in this collection are equipped with handmade enamel dials. This material offers infinite depth of color and unique sparkles. This unique version (1/1) of the ArtyA Guitar Watch is fully handcrafted in collaboration with John McLaughlin, the legendary guitarist and Luc Pettavino’s friend, without whom this project would not have been possible. by Joshua Munchow ArtyA Purity Tourbillon: Science Fiction Turned Science Fact In 1986, the world was introduced to the idea of a futuristic material: in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , ship doctor Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley) and chief engineer Montgomery Scott (James Doohan) traveled back in time for a pair of humpback whales, which necessitated building a massive tank to hold them. The pair thus revealed the formula for an innovative new transparent aluminum to barter for some heavy Plexiglas they needed for the tank. Whales in ‘Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home’ The concept of transparent aluminum seemed like true science fiction at the time: how on earth could aluminum be made transparent? ​ The aluminum that we generally use is not pure aluminum. In fact, nearly no aluminum that we can see exists as pure aluminum; it is too reactive with oxygen to stay pure and so is almost exclusively found as an oxide. The aluminum in products that we use every day, therefore, is also not pure, but rather an alloy that has been mixed with other elements to derive certain properties and often covered with a very thin oxide layer due to its reactivity. ​ Here’s the rub: so far you have probably been thinking of metallic aluminum, but that is not the only way aluminum can exist. Metallic aluminum is very common, but aluminum oxides can form different crystalline structures thanks to differences in how the atomic structure of the oxide occurred. Another main crystalline form of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) is known as corundum, a transparent mineral. If you’re reading this, you probably know it better by its horological name: sapphire crystal. Colorful forms of corundum – like rubies – are simply aluminum oxides with trace elements that present different properties. So this begs the question: since what we call aluminum is actually an aluminum alloy comprising various elements, wouldn’t an aluminum oxide, namely sapphire, be the literal expression of transparent aluminum? I’d say it is. ​ Chemistry nerd side note: metallic aluminum (and all other metals) form a crystalline lattice structure when solid, but the arrangement of atoms is different than the crystalline structure that we would associate with pretty gemstones. Atomic structure is what defines every mechanical property of a material on a macro scale, which is what can lead to the carbon being able to create both super-soft graphite and diamonds when in different arrangements. ​ This means we’ve been using transparent aluminum for thousands of years, we just didn’t know that’s what it was. And now, thanks to modern chemistry and material science, people have developed both artificial sapphire and other ceramic formulations with aluminum (namely aluminum oxynitride) to create the once-thought-fictional transparent aluminum. ​ All of this is to say that watches using synthetic sapphire for the crystals are actually using transparent aluminum, which would then mean that watches in full sapphire crystal cases are effectively using Star Trek-hypothesized technology for the entire case. Enter ArtyA and its new Purity Tourbillon , a stunning watch combining an ultra-minimal skeletonized tourbillon movement with the perfectly clear and super-strong sapphire crystal case, aka transparent aluminum. The brand doesn’t shy away from extreme aesthetics, but the Purity Tourbillon is extreme in a more mainstream way and for that reason I think it has a lot going for it. ArtyA Purity Tourbillon The Purity Tourbillon from ArtyA is a bold expression of style, but vastly different than the direction ArtyA usually takes, which includes pieces with unique materials, finishes, and aesthetics combined in unpredictable ways. The Purity Tourbillon is aptly named because it is truly a distilled piece of watchmaking without excess. The case is the obvious first step as it is a completely transparent block of sapphire crystal, hiding nothing and with minimal details so as to not distract from the movement inside. ​ The movement is extremely pared back with only a few arched bridges holding the going train and connecting to a flying tourbillon at 9 o’clock. The tourbillon almost seems to float separately from the movement thanks to the single thin arch extending from the main assembly. The movement is symmetrical along the horizontal axis and is fairly well balanced vertically due to the large diameter of the tourbillon. Since the Purity Tourbillon is all about purity of design and function, it only displays hours and minutes and uses no markers, numerals, or other features to clutter the aesthetic. The tourbillon has a 60-second rotation, but no dial or markers to track the seconds as they tick off. The only additional design feature is the ArtyA “A” logo on top of the winding mechanism; otherwise the case and movement keep things as clean as can be. Clean mechanics The architecture of the movement is built around circularity as all the bridges either reflect or downright match the shapes of the wheels and barrels. Two mainspring barrels are vertically positioned side by side, flanking the winding stem, and are held by a lower bridge in the shape of a circle intersecting the pivots. This is in turn is held by an upper bridge with indents matching the rims of the barrels, but also follows the circle of the lower bridge so the visual is a set of stacked circles. ​ Repetition of shape is a solid way to build visual interest with minimal details, allowing the design of the Purity to feel both complex and clean at the same time. The entirety of the aforementioned bridges, barrels, and winding mechanism fall within a larger circle: the main plate. The circularity repetition is much more apparent from the reverse than the front. Once you flip the watch over, you can clearly see the matryoshka-like circles stacked one inside the other holding the entire gear train. This also makes clear how the tourbillon is mounted opposite the bulk of the movement, with the skeletonizing shaped like overlapping circles. A large area could be left open that makes it seem like the structure holding the tourbillon is whisper thin. ​ Of course, the circle intersects with a smaller circle that is part of the overall movement diameter, rigidly attaching it to the edge of the case. This feature isn’t hidden from the front, but it also isn’t the highlight, allowing a bit of visual mystery since the focus becomes the whirling tourbillon. At 17 millimeters in diameter, and with a trilobed bridge dominating the look, the tourbillon is clearly meant to be the highlight. The movement, crafted by a complication specialist in Switzerland, is the entire point of the Purity Tourbillon. This is why the design of the bridges is so minimal, why the case is made out of completely transparent sapphire crystal, and why no markers or numerals or an extra sapphire crystal ring around the edge have been added. The impression you are supposed to get with this piece is how clean it is and how much isn’t there. Transparent aluminum, sort of Coming back to the sapphire crystal case: it really is the component that allows the minimalist skeleton movement to seem as delicate as it does. With no bulky steel or precious metal case surrounding the movement there is no visual weight to the watch. There are barely any components that seem thick enough to give the Purity Tourbillon any heft, and that is confirmed when you hold it. Sapphire crystal is fairly light, and without any real expanse of steel or brass in the movement thanks to its design the watch simply doesn’t have much to feel physically or visually heavy. The choice of sapphire crystal for the case was probably the best decision to achieve the design intent, and it is still pretty rare in the industry. Sure, sapphire crystal cases have popped up more in recent years, but the numbers are still low and they are very expensive. ​ Once you consider that the case is made from transparent aluminum (technically) then you understand that this watch has a lot going for it, particularly in how little it feels like there is. It also provides fans of ArytA with something different than its regular offerings, which are in and of themselves always very different from each other. In that way, this watch fits perfectly with the history of a brand that has changed things up with every piece, and this one is no different. ​ It’ll be hard since the Purity is made from sapphire crystal, but let’s break this watch down ! ​ Wowza Factor * 9.2 There is a moment where you realize that this watch looks like it shouldn’t weigh anything, and you are wowed extra hard! ArtyA Debuts Purity Tourbillon Watch hen it comes to drama and visual intricacy, perhaps no other complication can match the tourbillon escapement, especially when paired with a skeletonized movement. The added spectacle of a sapphire case can bring such a design into true horological shock-and-awe territory, and for its latest release boutique haute horlogerie brand ArtyA has achieved exactly that. With airy, dramatic bridges that take the form of concentric rings, this new ArtyA design makes striking use of negative space to keep visual focus squarely on its oversized in-house tourbillon. Newly nominated for the 2021 Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie de Genève in the hotly contested Tourbillon category, the new ArtyA Purity Tourbillon delivers one of the most thoughtful and minimal skeleton tourbillon presentations from a boutique brand in recent memory. September 19, 2021 by Sean Lorentzen Made of pure sapphire without any metal sub-chassis or lugs to increase rigidity, the case of the ArtyA Purity Tourbillon is focused squarely on allowing an unimpeded view of the movement within. Even the cushion crown at 3 o’clock is sapphire crystal, with a dramatically sloping form. At 46mm across, this case should be far from inconspicuous on the wrist, but given the material and the skeleton design this would likely attract attention at any size. The overall design of the case is elementally simple in images, with wide tapering lugs, slab case sides, and a narrow bezel. As one might expect from an all-sapphire case design however, the ArtyA Purity Tourbillon does suffer on the durability front with only a weak 30 meter water resistance rating. Strictly speaking, there is no dial on the ArtyA Purity Tourbillon. Everything visible within the sapphire case is part of the movement, and the one concession to functionality the Purity Tourbillon provides is a set of simple rose gold dauphine hands. There are no indices, scales, or chapter rings to distract from the spectacle of its skeleton movement, and while reading the time might be difficult the end result of this commitment to aesthetics is stunning in initial images. The narrow skeletonized black mainplate and bridges all take the form of concentric circles, from the outer ring attaching the movement to the case to the miniature layered rings supporting the gear train hidden on the caseback side. This circles-within-circles look leaves wide swaths of negative space to enhance the movement’s floating effect, while drawing the eye organically to the twin mainspring barrels at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock along with the 9 o’clock tourbillon. These three elements are carefully proportioned to visually counterweight one another, creating a light and finely balanced overall appearance. The tourbillon itself is a massive 16.2mm across with a brightly polished three-pronged skeleton cage to both draw attention and allow a clear view of the oscillation below. The Avengers-esque ArtyA “A” emblem at 3 o’clock keeps the modernist flair of the overall design as well. Beyond the bold aesthetics of the ArtyA Purity Tourbillon’s handwound skeleton tourbillon movement, this in-house powerplant also provides robust performance and high torque thanks to its paired twin mainspring barrels. Power reserve is a hefty 70 hours at 28,800 vph. ArtyA pairs this stylized design with an unorthodox medium gray alligator leather strap with stark black lowlights. New Release: The ArtyA Purity Tourbillon Offers An Unobstructed View Of Its Masterfully Crafted Movement The innovative brand has made things crystal clear in their quest for transparency An impressive full-sapphire case allows the double-barrel flying tourbillon movement inside to shine. ArtyA has achieved transparency to the highest degree in the Purity Tourbillon, not only in its use of the clear material but also in skeletonizing the movement’s mainplate and bridges. The result is a space-age display of top-tier watchmaking. The case and movement are impressive both technically and architecturally, and the flying tourbillon is actually one of the biggest in a watch out there. It’s 17mm diameter makes for an imposing visual display. This is not just a conversation piece — it’s a watch worth talking about. ​ The world of Haute Horlogerie has seen sapphire cases cropping up over the past few years, and tourbillons have been around for decades. These two facts, on their own, might lead you to believe that what ArtyA has done here is nothing new, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. It is the innovative manner in which the brand has combined these two elements that makes this watch such a stunning piece. And appearances aren’t everything, as this watch goes beyond aesthetics in its uncommon technical offerings. Take a look inside (it’s hard not to) Let’s start with the heart of the watch — the tourbillon. At 17mm in diameter, it is at least 50% larger than most others out there, which certainly helps in making it the attention-grabbing centerpiece it deserves to be. It also beats relatively quickly, with a frequency of 4 Hz (most other tourbillons operate at 2–3Hz). Its free-sprung balance with variable inertia makes for a far more resilient movement, which in turn offers better timekeeping. ​ Finally, the watch’s twin barrels ensure an impressive 70-hour power reserve. In a clever bit of engineering, the barrels are mounted in a parallel fashion. This means that the torque remains steady, making the watch’s use of power more efficient. That too helps improve accuracy. Telling the time is obviously the ultimate goal, and this watch does so with its beautiful golden dauphine hour and minute hands. There is no central seconds hand, instead, the flying tourbillon’s 360-degree rotation, which takes place over the course of 60 seconds, serves as a running seconds display. No bad angles The beautifully executed main plate of the movement is made up of a series of concentric circles, reminiscent of a crescent moon the outermost edge brings balance to the overall look. All elements are fully visible through the transparent outer shell. We find the ArtyA logo on the top of the bridge which supports the twin-mainsprings. These elements are all given a darker finish, which adds depth and contrast to the look of the movement regardless of which side you are looking at it from. ​ Finally, the case, which despite being rather classic and utilitarian in shape, still manages to impress. The material used for its construction is a perfectly clear sapphire crystal. Also used for the wonderfully faceted crown, it shines like a jewel and might fool an uninformed admirer into thinking that it is a fragile thing. In fact, the case is incredibly resistant thanks to the hardness of sapphire. It comes in at an impressive third place behind moissanite and diamond on the list of hardest minerals, scoring a 9 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Final thoughts All in all, this first look at the ArtyA Purity Tourbillon clearly shows the brand’s desire to innovate and push the boundaries of watchmaking. The unique details take this watch beyond what it comes across as on paper. I take this as an indication of a level of maturity and awareness typically only seen from older and more established luxury brands. Geneva Days 2019: Artya Son of the Alps – Megève Edition By Sarah Lee Geneva is a special place, surrounded on one side by the Jura Mountains and on the other side by the French Alps. A winter sports paradise, there are hundreds of ski resorts within an hour or two from the heart of the city. ​ One of the most famous ski resorts located in the French Alps is Megève, a resort founded by the Rothschild family in the 1920s to be the French alternative to St. Moritz, located only an hour’s drive from Geneva. ​ This season, Geneva-based watchmaking brand Artya formed an official partnership with the village of Megève to produce a special edition timepiece dedicated to this beautiful village. ​ The result is the ArtyA Son of the Alps Snowflake: Megève Edition, a timepiece that features a skeletonized snowflake on the dial. ​ “it is an honor for Artya to partner with Megève,” says Yvan Arpa, founder and owner of Artya. “Some important members of the Rothschild family are Artya collectors and the owner of Guilhem, the most prestigious retailer in Megève, is a good friend and a great partner for us.” Arpa has been busy this winter. Moissanite is the second hardest material on earth after diamond (its hardness on the Mohs scale is between 9.25 and 9.5), making it virtually impossible to machine. Moissanite’s light dispersion index is twice that of diamond (0.104 vs. 0.044), resulting in an extraordinary rainbow of brilliance and scintillation. The case is cut with 600 facets (a traditionally cut diamond has just 58 facets) to magnify moissanite’s high dispersion index – and free the fire! ArtyA is taking innovation to a whole new level for the Only Watch 2023 charity auction with the Purity Moissanite watch. This one-of-a-kind timepiece is also a world first, and in more ways than one: Purity Moissanite not only introduces the brand’s new architectural Manufacture movement, but also a cutting-edge new case material so difficult to machine that it has never been used in watchmaking. Until now. Fascinated by moissanite, the dazzling and lustrous mineral originating from the heart of a meteorite crater, ArtyA couldn’t resist the challenge of transforming it into a timepiece for this extremely important cause. And the result is mesmerizing. What is it that makes the quest for Beauty so difficult? To not only house but also showcase its new Manufacture movement, independent watchmaking brand ArtyA developed a new, unique case in moissanite. This semi-precious mineral, discovered in 1893 in a meteorite crater by Nobel Prize-winning French physicist Henri Moissan, had never before been used in the watch industry, and this despite its entrancing beauty. ​ Its hardness, second only to that of diamond, makes it virtually impossible to machine. It has a melting point of 2,730 degrees Celsius – compared to 1,300 for glass – and can withstand pressures up 52.1 gigapascals (equivalent to more than 500,000 ATM). Its hardness on the Mohs scale ranges between 9.25 and 9.5, making this new watch case the most scratch-resistant ever used in horology. Having worked on all aspects of sapphire crystal, including developing NanoSaphirTM, a sapphire crystal whose hue varies depending on ambient light, the Geneva watch brand was naturally drawn to moissanite and its dazzling aesthetic properties. Its physical properties, however, meant ArtyA had to develop new and exclusive processes to machine this mineral – silicon carbide in its native state; its chemical formula is SiC – of extraterrestrial origin from beyond the solar system. Un boîtier entièrement en verre saphir parfaitement transparent et orné de deux imposants et élégants inserts en or. Le redoutable challenge a été de réussir à enraciner cette parure dans l’un des matériaux les plus dur au monde. Défi réussi grâce à l’étroite collaboration avec le fameux et talentueux bijoutier Genevois, Monsieur Philippe Barbey . Cette décoration raffinée et hors du temps rend cette pièce unique et son porteur fier. La complexité du mélange entre son mouvement squelleté, son boitier en verre saphir et sa parure d’or éclatante crée une pièce qui ne s’essoufflera jamais. Cette incroyable montre possède un boîtier en saphir synthétique créé en laboratoire qui possède les mêmes propriétés physiques, les mêmes caractéristiques visuelles et le même niveau de dureté que les pierres précieuses naturelles. Les saphirs naturels sont créés par la terre, ce qui les rend rares. Les pierres synthétiques sont créées par l’homme dans un environnement soigneusement contrôlé. Ce boîtier est incroyablement résistant aux rayures en raison de la dureté remarquable des saphirs – 9 sur l’échelle de Moh’s (environ 1800 Vickers), le troisième minéral le plus dur, après le diamant à 10 et la moissanite à 9,5. NanoSaphir Bicolore Cette première mondiale innovante est disponible dans plusieurs des collections emblématiques de la marque. WorldTempus ArtyA est le spécialiste des boîtiers de haute horlogerie entièrement en saphir. Ce Savoir Faire est utilisé dans les principales collections de la marque comme Son of Earth, Son of Gears, Son of Sea, Son of a Gun et les hautes complications. Après des années de recherche et de développement, c'est avec fierté qu'ArtyA présente une nouvelle première mondiale : Des Boîtiers entièrement bicolores dans la masse en Nanosaphir !!! Pour ce faire ArtyA a utilisé une combinaison multi-composants à haute température à base de deux oxydes principaux - SiO2 et Al2O3. Ces oxydes sont des composants clés de la plupart des pierres précieuses naturelles. Une température de 1700°C. (contre 700°C pour le verre) est nécessaire pour synthétiser ce matériau. ArtyA a su adapter cette technologie pour créer une matière homogène extrêmement dure et difficile à usiner spécifiquement optimisé pour l'horlogerie et devient ainsi depuis 2017 la première entreprise au monde à l'utiliser dans un boîtier de montre en complément de nos collections en saphir pur. Le NanoSaphir a une dureté incroyable, 7 sur l'échelle de Mohs, ce qui est beaucoup plus élevé que le verre (5 sur l'échelle de Mohs), cela garanti la durabilité de ce magnifique matériau qui se joue de la lumière. Disponible en 39 , 41 et 46 mm. Son of Earth Ces montres ne se contentent pas de reproduire le design, le style et la couleur d'un papillon. Sous le contrôle strict des autorités compétentes et avec leur plein accord, l'artiste D. Arpa-Cirpka a réussi à incorporer au cadran de véritables ailes de papillon, des feuilles de tabac, des pigments naturels, des feuilles d'or et bien d'autres éléments naturels pour créer des pièces d'art toujours plus uniques.
